Petya Lund
Founder of eta Verlag
born 1983 in Bulgaria. After her schooling at the German Gymnasium in Sofia,
she moved to Cologne, Germany. She then proceeded to study theatre, film and television and later on got her master’s degree. Since 2014 she has been living in Berlin, working as publisher and as a freelance translator (Bulgarian into German). From the premises of her press (eta Verlag), based in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, she organises cultural events relating to Bulgaria and Eastern Europe, hosting readings, performances, exhibitions and discussions.
In my time working as a freelance translator and interpreter I realised that the literature and culture associated with the countries of Southeastern Europe are generally little known in Germany, yet there is so much that is new and exciting to explore – for all of us. My curiosity has led me to delve into many cultural treasures; my aim is to share these joyful discoveries with you. Personally, I find art and literature offer rich opportunity to gain insight into different ways of life, so providing a responsive and useful means of cultural mediation.

Gaby Bergmann was born in 1971 and lives and works in Hamburg. As a trained lithographer and illustrator, she is in the constant process of finding a language between figuration and abstraction to artistically describe the complexity of her subject matter. For the past 17 years she has been teaching in art schools across Hamburg, working as a lecturer in illustration and also working in the field of visual communication. “I explore the development of an image in relation to the facts of the material I am given. I combine different themes in pictorial and symbolic language, describing them through the drawn line and telling stories visually across the page”.

About us

eta Verlag was founded in Berlin in 2016 by Petya Lund.

In her time in Bulgaria, with her background in media sciences, Slavic studies and education theory, Petya had begun to introduce contemporary Bulgarian literature to readers in Germany. She frequently acted as an interpreter at readings and began to recognise a gap in the market with regard to the availability of Bulgarian literature in the German language and so formed eta Verlag.

Through the experience gained in the promotion of eta, working with various East European cooperation partners across numerous book fairs, literary festivals and readings, she was inspired to expand the scope of her press. Gradually she began to introduce authors from other Eastern European countries, such as Serbia. This was accompanied by a revitalisation of the brand of eta Verlag. With beginnings in collected works of lyrical poetry and anthologies of short stories, eta is steadily expanding to embrace substantial works of fiction, notably with the inclusion of historical novels.

Against the background of a renewed and increasing uncertainty in communication between Western and Eastern Europe, the publishing house sees itself as a cultural mediator and promoter of dialogue. It focuses on a strong emerging literary scene; one that wants to assert its affiliation to a unified Europe from its own cultural roots. The Europe seen on the map represents a geographical entity yet is often perceived as segmented and split.

eta publishing house pursues the claim to produce high-quality, select contemporary literature in the finest quality print.
