eta Verlag was founded in Berlin in 2016 by Petya Lund.
In her time in Bulgaria, with her background in media sciences, Slavic studies and education theory, Petya had begun to introduce contemporary Bulgarian literature to readers in Germany. She frequently acted as an interpreter at readings and began to recognise a gap in the market with regard to the availability of Bulgarian literature in the German language and so formed eta Verlag.
Through the experience gained in the promotion of eta, working with various East European cooperation partners across numerous book fairs, literary festivals and readings, she was inspired to expand the scope of her press. Gradually she began to introduce authors from other Eastern European countries, such as Serbia. This was accompanied by a revitalisation of the brand of eta Verlag. With beginnings in collected works of lyrical poetry and anthologies of short stories, eta is steadily expanding to embrace substantial works of fiction, notably with the inclusion of historical novels.
Against the background of a renewed and increasing uncertainty in communication between Western and Eastern Europe, the publishing house sees itself as a cultural mediator and promoter of dialogue. It focuses on a strong emerging literary scene; one that wants to assert its affiliation to a unified Europe from its own cultural roots. The Europe seen on the map represents a geographical entity yet is often perceived as segmented and split.
eta publishing house pursues the claim to produce high-quality, select contemporary literature in the finest quality print.
